My SEO Experiments
I hate SEO.
I cringe every time I see a stupid spammy comment like this on blogs:
thank you for your wonderful article which is very informative. If you want web hosting try this super awesome company www.xyz-web-hosting-company.com
Google has taken steps to stop spammers but still SEO bullshit goes on. Here is what Google says about SEO.
“Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines.”
I personally believe fresh content, trumps blind SEO. Inventika Solutions has always focused on creating products people would love to use and hope that they’d share it with their friends.
It has helped us gain a higher pagerank but the results have been skewed largely in favor of one single page.
My home page has a page rank of a measly 1.
However the page which became a world wide web hit has a pagerank of 5.
If my homepage had this high pagerank, I would have been on the top of the search results for queries like ‘website design mumbai’. This is the most popular keywork for people in Mumbai looking to get a website for themselves.
Luckily for me my blog page has a high pagerank of 4.
I used this website to check my pagerank - http://www.prchecker.info
As of now (28, December, 2012) we don’t waste our time on SEO. Our aim at Inventika has always been to do work which can make us proud.
Most of our traffic comes from Google Adwords. It is an excellent way to get serious leads. The reason why Google ads perform better than almost any other form of advertising is that unlike a print or TV ad, which are shown to people who may or may not need it at that time, Google ads are displayed to only those who are looking for those type of services or products.
A guy who googles ‘webdesigner mumbai‘ and sees your ad on the top of search result is much more likely to buy from you than someone watching a Justin Bieber song, on VH1 and catches your ad.
Plus normally people think advertisements on websites are nuisance, eg. if you are looking to download a pirated copy of some movie and you get an ad from Netflix, you won’t have a sudden change of heart and purchase the movie.
However if you are looking to buy a car and you have 2 search results – one is a neat looking Google ad
and the other is a free search result which is at the top and has spammy, keyword stuffed description. Which one would you pick?
the Google adwords option looks more trustworthy to me. It has a neat description and looks appealing.
This is our main strategy and one which we are going to continue. However we’re planning to start SEO. The dark arts.
Because it can be done.
How are we going to do it?
2 ways. Great content and link building.
Our objective is to rank high on the search query ‘website design mumbai’. We love the internet and we won’t post spammy comments. It would be interesting to see how high we can go with legal SEO.
This article will be updated from time to time as our SEO experiments continue.
Read this excellent article by Paul Boag on Smashing Magazine where he argues that spending money on SEO is useless. It is better to produce quality content. He says
Update 1: 28 December, 2012
We use ‘Yoast WordPress SEO’ plugin to handle the meta keywords, description and other site tags.
A quick check on Alexa shows that our site has around 200 incoming links. Most of them about the iPod and the other are our (non-spammy) comments.
Step one in this experiment is to increase the no. of incoming links. We’ll be targeting link submission directories like Crunchbase.
Update 2: 14 March, 2013
Here is a website which ranks first in Google when you type ‘SEO’ :P
So these guys are the best in the industry.
I found this handy website which shows all the back links pointing to that website -
The site looks ugly and old. It seems to offer several tools for SEOing.
Update 2: 25 March, 2013
Currently our website stands on the 9th page for the query – ‘website design mumbai’.
